Did you know that a girl’s self-esteem peeks at age 9?!
Between the ages of 9 and 14, girls’ confidence levels fall by a staggering 30% (as opposed to boys’, which hold steady), and these can have lasting effects.
Of course these facts and figures are not absolute, and there are variances, but for the most part, we need to be working with our tween girls to BUILD THEM UP, and to empower them to build themselves up.
Falling confidence levels can show up in things like people pleasing, not wanting to try new things, not speaking up in class, perfectionism….
There are definitely ways to help our girls re-build their confidence, we just have to actively think about it, and help them along the way.
A few ways we can do this:
Get them out of their comfort zone. Taking risks can be scary, but it shows kids that they can do it, and that they can trust themselves
Normalize failure. I’m not saying encouraging failure, I’m saying let her know that it is OK to fail, and that the biggest successes have come from people’s failures.
Encouraging the growth mindset, the idea that we can grow our brains through perseverance, resilience and keeping at it. Our skills are not absolute.
Inspire self-acceptance - not necessarily always loving themselves, but accepting themselves nonetheless. Yoga designed specifically for tweens is such a great way to grow this self-acceptance, and to open the door to these challenging but necessary conversations. Through yoga & meditation, your tween girl can grow in confidence, can learn self-awareness and compassion.
My Yoga For Kids Summer Program is designed specifically for this tween age range, and is a wonderful way to introduce your tweens to yoga, in a relaxed way, that they can do in their own time.
